[NEWS] Riedel Unveils the Glass That Best Matches Japan's Native Grape “Koshu”
A look at the <Riedel Veritas Series> chosen by Koshu wine producers!
“Koshu,” a grape variety long cultivated in Japan, chiefly in Yamanashi Prefecture. Having been registered with the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) in 2010, it is now spreading its name as the first international variety among Japan's native grapes. At a time when many are interested in pairing Japanese cuisine with wine, the call to “taste Japanese wine more deeply and deliciously” seems to be growing.
RSN Japan Inc., which markets the Austrian wine-glass company “Riedel,” has announced a glass designed to draw out Koshu's character to the fullest. For the selection, Maximilian Riedel, the 11th-generation head of the Riedel family, came over from Austria and, last spring, held a tasting in Katsunuma, Koshu City, Yamanashi, inviting 22 wineries and 39 experts.
From 12 glass types and 4 Koshu wines, a majority vote narrowed it down to three white-wine glasses – the “Sauvignon Blanc,” the “Riesling,” and the “Champagne Wine Glass” – and the “Champagne Wine Glass” was ultimately chosen.
Characterized by an egg-like shape tapering toward the top, it accentuates the fresh fruitiness of the Koshu grape and achieves a fine balance with its refreshing acidity.
For those accustomed to drinking Western wines in particular, this glass may be just the chance to rediscover the fresh appeal of Japanese wine.
